New Orleans Griffins Community Football Club
New Orleans Hall
New Orleans Estate
Hornsey Rise
London N19 3SZ

Email: info@neworleansgriffinsfc.org.uk

Background

The club was formed as an informal association in 2004 when a group of young people on the New Orleans Estate, in North Islington, approached members of their Tenants & Residents Association (TRA), seeking help in establishing a football club on the estate. Operating as a sub-committee of the TRA, the club soon obtained support from the Local Authority and others. This enabled infrastructure development, design of the club’s logo and the employment of professional CRB checked football coaches, (provided by Access 2 Sports, based at the Sobell Centre, Holloway North London), to run free sessions on the estate for young people in the area.

The Early Years

2004
Club formed under the leadership of Ngoma Bishop, as a project of the New Orleans Griffins Estate Tenants & Residents Association.

2005
The project benefited from a development grant from the Cripplegate Foundation of £3,513.00, made to New Orleans Tenants & Residents Association. In the same year, the London Borough of Islington made an award of £14,347.02 to enable further development and an open coaching service.

2006
The club was awarded a three-year grant of just under £10,000 from the Football Foundation enabling it to offer a more structured coaching programme. This money also allowed the club to enter an under 14s team in the Camden & Islington Football Youth League. A donation of £500.00 was received from the Elthorne Community Project and a further £100.00 from Local Ward Councillor G Foxsmith who participated in a ‘fun-run’ to benefit community projects in the Hillrise Ward of North Islington.

Griffins Under 14s outfitted by a partnership comprising of Barclays Bank and the Football Foundation, through an initiative called the Junior Kit Scheme.

New Orleans Griffins Community Football Club was established as a separate entity and elected its first Management Committee consisting of local parents, sports enthusiasts and Community Development Workers.

The Football Foundation acknowledged the strides made by this fledgling club in such a short time and indicated its intention to use the Griffins as a case study.

2007
Islington Council made an award of a further £4000.00 towards coaching and administration. £90.00 was raised through subscriptions paid by players and members of the club.

A new Management Committee was elected which included individuals with the wide range of skills necessary to drive the club forward and younger people who could represent and articulate the interest of the organisations client group.

Supporters joined members of the Under 14s Squad and the Management Committee and other London based amateur clubs in two community fun events held at Walthamstow Dog Stadium and organised by the British Greyhound Racing Board. Clubs were allowed to keep income from tickets they sold and this provided the Griffins with a further £214.00 of income.
